The truth every artist knows: great henna + great aftercare = the darkest stain. Follow these seven proven steps and your mehandi will turn rich, deep, and long-lasting.
- 1. Lemon-sugar seal: Once the paste dries, gently dab a lemon juice + sugar mixture over the design. It keeps the paste moist and pushes more dye into the skin.
- 2. Keep the area warm: Body heat deepens the stain. Wrap your hands lightly or sit near gentle warmth while the paste sets.
- 3. Avoid water for 8 hours: After removing the paste, keep water away from the design for at least 8 hours — water stops the oxidation process early.
- 4. Scrape, don't wash: Remove dried paste by gently scraping or rubbing with oil — never with water. Water lightens the final colour significantly.
- 5. The clove smoke trick: Briefly passing your hands over warm clove smoke (safely, at a distance) is an age-old trick to intensify the colour.
- 6. Seal with mustard oil: After scraping, apply mustard oil or eucalyptus oil. It seals the design and continues to darken it over the next day.
- 7. Leave it overnight: For the darkest possible result, keep the paste on 6–8 hours — overnight is best. Patience pays in colour.
Remember: hands always stain darker than feet, and the colour keeps deepening for 24–48 hours after application. At Mehandi Vatika, every client receives a personalised aftercare guide with their appointment. 🌿
